Before the 2010 Games, the name Bryon Wilson (Butte, MT) wasn't a name with which the American public was familiar. But, one men's moguls bronze medal later, Wilson's is a story for the books - a kid who went into the season an alternate before picking up two World Cup podiums and a ticket to his first Olympics. But, beyond the athlete, there's a kid whose life is immersed in the arts and having a good time.
So, in your first Olympics you blaze the course and take a bronze medal home with you. Was it expected?
I don't know if I expected it, but earlier in the year I had two podiums and that was definitely a confidence booster. I went into it thinking I could do well and when I got the bronze it was just amazing. It was the best thing I've ever had.
And now that you have it, where is your bronze medal?
I keep it in my bedroom. I sleep with it.
Really?
No, I don't sleep with it. But it is in my bedroom.
Other than your medal, what was the coolest part of the experience you had at the Games?
Outside of winning the medal it was cool just being in Vancouver taking in the Olympic spirit and going to other events. Being there in the whole atmosphere was pretty cool. It was fun watching the U.S. do so well in all the events.
We heard there was a McDonalds open 24/7 that was free to the athletes in the Olympic village. Did you indulge?
I definitely had my fair share of McDonalds. Either a Big Mac or a double Quarter Pounder. It was pretty delicious. When I got in late I'd go in and just get a cheese burger.
Now that you are home from the season, what are you up to?
I just got off the mountain up at Snowbird. There was two feet of fresh powder so that was pretty awesome. I'm also working on some fish. I have some fish carving orders going on so I'm doing that.
Wait, fish carving? How does one do that?
I start from a block of wood, I carve the fish how I want it, then I paint the fish and put it on a mount. It just depends on what kind of fish the person wants and how big they want it to be. That's what I've got going on right now. I have a few orders of a couple of brown trout. Check it out! http://www.wilsoncarvings.com
What is the biggest fish you have ever carved?
There was a big brown trout that I did for a guy who caught one out of the Provo River. It was about 30 inches - it was really big.
So, since you can't carve fish during the season, what do you do to entertain yourself when you're on the road?
When I'm at comps I have a couple books and I bring my sketch book with me and that keeps me entertained.
You're a pretty artistic guy, aren't you Bryon?
Yeah, for sure. I really like doing it and it gets my mind off skiing for a bit. It's a good outlet for me and I enjoy it a lot. I've been sketching and painting since I was a little kid.
OK, last question. You killed it last year, what can we expect from you in the future?
I'm pretty on fire for this summer and training. I'm going to go into it trying to be the best in the world next season. It will be a hard working summer and we'll see what happens.
