BIOGRAPHY
Lake Tahoe's Shannon Bahrke, so distinctive with her glitter eye shadow and high-energy style, resisted ski racing at first, but gave in to a high school coach before turning to freestyle. Good move because she's skied her way to Olympics and World Championships medals, World Cup wins, a World Cup title and U.S. titles.
UPDATE
Shannon came back strong from a knee injury suffered in 2007 to mark 2009 with consistent results highlighted by a sixth-place finish at Worlds. Her coaches expect the 2002 silver medalist to take it up to the next level by being healthy and strong in 2010. Fans can look to see her throw an off axis 720 in competition again this year and pick up her speed as she heads for the Olympic stage once again.
FIRST TRACKS
Like a lot of Tahoe kids, Bahrke was skiing at 3, having a ball skiing with Mom. In the seventh grade, a high school coach tried to coax her into alpine racing, and she eventually did. When she moved to freestyle, she was a combined skier before settling on moguls. Winning the 2002 Gold Cup on New Year's Eve at Deer Valley brought her an Olympic spot (and $10,000) and was the confidence boost that helped release any tentativeness when she won an Olympic silver medal in Deer Valley on first day of Olympic competition, just six weeks later.

I AM
Totally stoked about my younger brother Scotty being the World Cup aerials Rookie of the Year in '07...After the Olympics, I bought a house and spent the summer remodeling it...Windsurfing, biking, waterskiing - and don't forget shopping...In high school, I had 24/7 activities - soccer in the fall, skiing in winter, softball and track in spring...And trumpet with the symphonic and jazz band, and I even got the chance to tour nationally with them...My soundbite: "Success is failure turned inside out"...
