Lindsey Vonn, Olympic gold medalist and winner of three consecutive Audi FIS World Cup overall titles, has both hit the top and scaled back her game at the same time. Following a record hardware haul last winter, the alpine superstar took a step back from skiing in order to let the bruises heal following a particularly black and blue season. But her kicking back included hanging out with Betty White and knocking in a hole-in-one while spinning a round of golf. No worries though, she's back in the gym full-time now and already looking forward to the World Champs being staged outside her Vail bedroom window in 2015.
Post World Cup Finals, you decided to give the body a good long rest from skiing, how'd you fill the time?
It wasn't really all that hard. So many really cool opportunities came up like going to the Met Costume Gala, meeting Betty White at the White House Correspondents' dinner, handing out an Academy of Country Music award, appearing on Law & Order – it's actually been pretty surreal.
Surreal sounds like a good way to describe it. Didn't you get a hole-in-one a couple of weeks ago?
Yeah, it was pretty crazy. It was only the second time I've played 18 holes in my life and I knocked one down on a par three hole at the Safeway Invitational in Monterey, CA. Now everyone keeps asking if they can bring me to Vegas.
Back to the Law & Order gig. You started up a Facebook page to help save the show, how's that project going?
Well, there are almost 28,000 friends of the page, so I guess OK. There are some rumors that it may be coming back on. I think show creator Dick Wolf is hoping to find a new home for the show and if that doesn't work out, there may be some plans for a two-hour TV movie. A movie would be cool, but I can't live on Law & Order reruns all next season.
You're back in the gym now with the summer routine you've made famous, how's it going?
Pretty good, my body definitely needed the rest after last season. I've always liked working out so it's not that hard of a shift for me. I'll be doing a similar schedule to last summer with time in Vail, the Center of Excellence in Park City and Austria before we head to New Zealand and Chile for on snow training.
Speaking of Vail, you threw up a Facebook post almost immediately when Beaver Creek/Vail was announced as the home of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
I couldn't be more excited for that. I've always planned on racing through the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But now that my hometown is hosting worlds in 2015, I'm going to have to go another year for sure. It was so amazing when they hosted in 1999. This is going to be big not just for Vail, but for ski racing across the globe.
Any goals for next season?
My goals are always to defend my World Cup titles, which is definitely going to be a challenge next winter. Maria [Riesch] is going to be charging and Lara Gut will be back on tour, plus there are a lot of young girls who are starting to show some serious speed. I'd also like to defend my World Championship golds in downhill and super G and try and pick up another medal in there too. Garmisch is hosting Worlds and I really feel comfortable and confident at that venue.
