KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (Feb. 29) - Julien Lizeroux of France won a World Cup slalom Sunday, moving from fourth place in the first run to earn the second win of his career. Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH) led the way for the U.S., notching 19th place, 1.6 seconds back from the leader.
First run leader, Giuliano Razzoli of Italy hung on for second place and Felix Neureuther came in third.
"Jimmy skied a solid first run and was quite good on the bottom section," Men's Alpine Head Coach Sasha Rearick said. "In the second he was solid and definitely skiing better, but didn't ski with the confidence to be aggressive in a few key sections. He's got the ability, just not the confidence right now."
Cochran, who is coming off a 10th place at World Championships, was also 18th this season in Wengen.
Red bib leader Jean Bapstiste Grange of France still holds a 49-point lead in the slalom standings despite finishing 29th on Sunday. Croatian Ivica Kostelic is second and Austrian Manfred Pranger third.
Good course conditions and easy sets led to a tightly packed field. In the first run just 1.86 seconds separated the top 30 racers and in the final results the top 11 racers were within a second of one another.
"The first run set was very easy and rhythmical. Ted [Ligety; Park City, UT] ran 16th and skied aggressively, he was leading through the first two splits then straddled in a very easy spot," Rearick said.
According to Rearick, the rest of the Team struggled.
"Tim Kelley [Starksboro, VT] stood up but lacked the speed he needed, Cody [Marshall; Pittsfield, VT] straddled early and Jit [Tim Jitloff; Reno, NV] went out," he said.
Kranjska Gora was the final slalom before the World Cup Finals in Are, Sweden. Ted Ligety and Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) will compete in the slalom finals.
