BIOGRAPHY
Olympian and daughter to Olympic gold medalist Pepi Stielger, Resi (RAY-zee) was born and grew up in prime ski country (Jackson Hole, WY, and Lienz, Austria). She's represented the United States at every level of alpine ski racing - Topolino, Whistler Cup, Junior Worlds, World Cup, World Championships and the Olympics. She’s won Junior Worlds medals and U.S. titles and if not for three injury plagued season, would likely be a regular on the World Cup podium.
After two missed seasons do to injuries and the recovery time that goes with them, Stiegler was back on track and ready to return to being competitive at the World Cup level when she fell while training giant slalom at Copper Mountain, CO and fractured her tibia and fibia in her left leg.
No stranger to the rehab program, Stiegler has been plagued by injuries the prior two seasons after a crash in Lienz, Austria, in 2007, when she fractured her left arm and tore ligaments in her right knee. Her return was hampered further when she broke her right leg in late summer of 2008 forcing her to miss all of the 2009 season except the World Championships where she finished 19th in slalom.
After having all the hardware removed from her leg in late May, Stiegler was itching to get summer training on the calendar.
RESI SAYS
My bones looked great so he decided to go in and take everything out of my leg. I had hardware in my femur and tibia. I went into surgery a little nervous and bumming, but Dr. Sterrett said my leg looked great. He cleaned it up but there wasn't too much work to be done and my bones looked strong so I will heal fast!
For the first time I have had good news and it felt great to get it. I needed this! I didn’t even need to sleep in the hospital and I got out for a small crutch walk to get some fresh air. Now, I can’t stop sleeping and eating. It's amazing what your body does to heal. I'm excited for this adventure! I can’t wait to feel better and start training all over again.
FIRST TRACKS
She was skiing at 2, racing at 6. In '99, Stiegler was silver medalist in giant slalom and bronze medalist in slalom at the Western J3 Juniors Olympics; a year later, she won gold in both events at JOs. She earned World Cup starts for '03 by finishing second (with one win) in the 2002 Nor Am slalom points, then gave a preview of her 2003 breakout by tearing through European-packed fields (before the Park City World Cups) to finish sixth in the first two Super Series giant slaloms. "I didn't go to World Juniors last year, so I'm gonna make it to the real World Championships this year,” she said. And she made it.
In her first Juniors Worlds in '03, she was bronze medalist in slalom and combined. Stiegler credits not only her parents but another Olympic champion and silver medalist - former Olympic and world champion Diann Roffe, who coached in a U.S. Development program for several winters - with helping sculpt such a promising racer.
OFF THE SNOW: Stiegler splits her time between Jackson Hole and Hawaii with boyfriend and professional wind surfer Kevin Pritchard. Dad is Pepi Stiegler, Austrian Olympic multi-medalist and former ski school director in Jackson Hole; Mom, Carrie, is an appraiser in Jackson Hole; and Stiegler has a younger brother, Seppi, who races for Denver University.
