BIOGRAPHY
Olympian Tommy Ford is one of the fastest movers in ski racing. The U.S. Ski Team took notice after he locked four gold medals at the 2006 U.S. Junior National Championships. That proved to be a good look as Ford went on to score World Cup points in his rookie season on the White Circus along with making the Olympic team for giant slalom.
But when Ford started the 2010 season, he wasn't focused on making the Olympics. He was focusing on scoring World Cup points and "seeing what happens." What happened was he notched a 24th at Alta Badia, Italy – one of the toughest hills on the World Cup circuit then backed it up with 21st in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia just before the Olympics.
The Olympics were a big eye opener for the young racer, but provided big time motivation. Just ask the folks at Whiteface, NY. Ford rolled into town for the U.S. Alpine Championships and cleaned house taking home victories in combined, giant slalom and slalom.
TOMMY SAYS
The last two years I’ve been fighting to get the GS win at U.S. Champs right behind Jit [Tim Jitloff; Reno, NV], and I finally got it. I’ve been looking for speed all year and I wasn't able to put together the Olympics like I wanted to, but it's all part of the process. I was psyched to close the year so strong and looking forward to getting a shot at my first World Championships.
Summer is actually a really cool time for us. After the season, I head to Dartmouth for the spring semester and then get right back into training. New Zealand and Chile are always good trips and then we're right back in it with Soelden, which was my first World Cup start last year.
FIRST TRACKS
Ford grew up in Bend, OR and started to ski at Mt. Bachelor around age two. My mother and father both raced and coached. My brother also raced so I have been around racing all of my life. I started with MBSEF around the age of seven. From there I just kept having fun and racing. He joined the U.S. Development Team right out of high school and has been climbing the ranks ever since.
OFF THE SNOW
Well, there isn't really much off the snow with Ford. Skiing is life, until the snow melts. Then, he's into skateboarding, rock climbing, drawing, mountain biking and attempting to play the cello. A big summer experience prior to the Olympics was playing a big role in the Audi documentary on the U.S. Ski Team, which aired in prime time on NBC just two weeks before the Games.
