BIOGRAPHY
Jimmy Cochran is one of the heralded “Skiing Cochrans." His grandfather was U.S. head coach in 1974, his dad and three aunts were Olympians, and he’s got two cousins on the U.S. Ski Team and another climbing the ladder.

With the Olympics on the radar, Cochran opted to forgo World Cup giant slalom racing for the 2010 season in favor of a slalom focus. The plan produced World Cup points in six races to finish a career best 20th in the discipline ranks for the season. However, in an event where millimeters matter, Cochran missed a gate and hiked the first run bumping him out of contention. Never one to turn down a second run, especially at the Olympics Cochran headed back to the start and charged Whistler Creekside before straddling a gate and going out. Regardless of the Olympic finish, his World Cup results moved him back into the "A" group for the 2011 season.

JIMMY SAYS

There's something special about the Olympics, just competing in that environment is a really amazing experience. Would I have like to finish better, sure, but slalom is a fickle race. Regardless, I was smiling - the second run was one of the coolest races I've ever seen. Gold medal winner Guiliano Razzoli put down an amazing run.

It was a good season, top 20 is the best of my career and it's going to keep me motivated and excited to ski next season. I just love skiing, 2014 is a long way off, but it's possible.

FIRST TRACKS

On skis at three, Cochran started racing at about seven at Cochran’s, the small area outside Burlington, VT, where his father and three aunts - all Olympians and U.S. champions - trained behind the family homestead. He eventually enrolled at Middlebury but left after his freshman year (in ’02), enrolling at the University of Vermont (where his grandfather and father skied). He lit-up the eastern carnival circuit with eight victories during the 2003 season, finishing by capturing slalom silver and giant slalom bronze at the NCAA championships at Dartmouth College. He made the U.S. Ski Team with the 2004 season.

OFF THE SNOW

Cochran is always busy with a project, most of the time it involves fixing or building something at the family ski area. His annual spring charity slalom has become – the "Thank God for Snowmaking" race – has become a Team favorite, attracting elite racers like Ted Ligety and Sarah Schleper last season. The big guns shared the start gate with local high schoolers, who skipped class for the race and members of the famous Cochran family – and everyone went off the pro jump. Awards are T-bar trophies made by Cochran himself.
