Andrew Weibrecht is sibling No. 4 in a family of five and took up skiing after he “begged and pleaded” with his parents to let him join older brother Jonathan at Whiteface. Now one of the most exhilarating ski racers to watch kick out of the start gate, Weibrecht rocketed swinging on his parents chandeliers as a kid to his first World Cup top 10 in December of 2007 before becoming the 2010 Olympic super G bronze medalist, sharing the podium with silver medalist Bode Miller.

You wouldn't have been able to tell in Whistler, but Weibrecht secured his Olympic hardware while competing with an injured right shoulder. A crash in Kvitfjell, Norway during the second to last downhill of the World Cup calendar (directly after the Olympics) sealed the deal and Weibrecht flew home immediately for surgery on his wing. The procedure forced him to miss both the World Cup Finals and the U.S. Championships held at his home mountain. Six weeks of recovery later and he was hammering toward a degree at Dartmouth and itching to get back in the gym and firing full guns when the 2011 season kicks into gear in late November.

ANDREW SAYS

I haven't ever come down leading a race. Granted, I wore bib 3 in the Olympic super G and I figured I would stay in there until 10 guys came down. But I kept staying in there.

Coming into the Olympics, I was just hoping to put down runs that I could be proud of and do the best I could every single run. It was a special day, I was on the podium with two of the greatest athletes in the world in Bode and Aksel and it was my first major international podium. As a kid, you dream about days like that.

FIRST TRACKS

Growing up in Lake Placid, he was with NYSEF from the start...and that start was at five. His older brother was a racer “and I felt left out,” according to Weibrecht. His race training began five years later and he would go on to make the U.S. Development Team with the 2003 season and be named to the C Team for ’05. He also raced at the 2004, ’05 and ’06 JWCs (where he concluded his Junior Worlds portfolio with a bronze medal in super G).

OFF THE SNOW

Nicknamed the Warhorse for the way he attacks the mountain, Weibrecht's Olympic medal was honored with Lake Placid's Cottage Café (owned by his folks Ed and Lisa) serving pints of "Warhorse." The pints came out again a few days later when Weibrecht returned home to parade down Lake Placid's Main Street on a fire truck. "It's crazy to think somebody wants to honor me, but it's been awesome to get all this support and excitement from my hometown. That's what has made this whole experience so cool to me," he said. Also a fan of fishing, mountain biking and is a big reader.
