BIOGRAPHY
Park City's TJ Lanning was the top-ranked junior in the world in his age group for slalom and super G in 2001. However, injuries have kept him from reaching the potential he showed early in his career. With multiple top-10 finishes at the World Cup level and a trip to the World Championships, Lanning has the speed to land on the podium. The only question still up in the air is when.
UPDATE
Lanning recovered extremely well from a 2008 meniscus tear to absolutely crush the first two months of the '09 season. After scoring a career-best ninth in downhill at the opening race in Lake Louise, Lanning went on to score at four more races including a 10th at the famed Saslong Classic downhill in Val Garden, Italy, where he was one of a historical five U.S. men to finish in the top 10. It was the best day in U.S. Ski Team history. Lanning was poised to keep the trend going through the season and feeling super strong when a mistake off the Hausberg jump during the Hahnenkamm downhill at Kitzbuehel resulted in a torn ACL and the end to what would have been an even more successful season. Regardless of the injury, Lanning still finished the season in the World Cup top 25 for downhill and super G, despite not racing the final three months of the winter. No stranger to the recovery routine, Lanning was right back in Park City at the newly opened Center of Excellence to take full advantage of the best recovery facility in Olympic sport. And as coaches report – he'll be ready to roll when Lake Louise comes knocking in November.
FIRST TRACKS
He began skiing at 3 and, as he worked his way from the Farm Team to the “big leagues” with the Park City Ski Team, Lanning was one of the nation’s most-watched juniors as he rolled into his teens. In 1999, Lanning was the super G champ and silver medalist in slalom at the Western J3 JOs. During the ’01 season, he was ranked No. 1 in the world for his age group in slalom and super G.
