WINTER PARK, CO (Dec. 17) – The U.S. Adaptive Alpine Team pointed it downhill on Thursday racing in the Winter Park Open super G. Team standouts included Allison Jones (Winter Park, CO), Danelle Umstead (Taos, NM), and Tyler Walker (Franconia, NH).
The race hill looked slightly different when athletes and coaches were inspecting the course Thursday morning. For the first time in several years, a Canadian coach took a different approach to setting the course.
"Winter Park is a unique hill, with a little narrow section that comes through a cut onto the main face," explained Head Coach Ray Watkins. "It was a great set, wide open and more downhill-like. The course was tight at the start and then it opened up. It ran great, especially down the final pitch."
The visually impaired classification was won by Mark Bathum (Seattle, WA) and Umstead. Caitie Sarubbi (Brooklyn, NY) had a solid day finishing in fifth. Umstead stood out as she and her husband, her guide, sped to the finish clinching the super G win.
Jones won the women's standing division completely dominating the field. Jones, put on a great show for her hometown crowd, shredding down a course set to her liking.
"I like to go fast and not have to worry about cranking it across the pitch and let the ski run out a little bit," admitted Jones. "This course was definitely set up that way."
Austria's Mitchell Gourley won the men's standing division. The top U.S. finisher was Ralph Green (Vail, CO) in seventh.
The sitting category was won by Walker and Laurie Stephens (Wenham, MA). Walker skied particularly fast beating out former coach, now teammate, Chris Devlin – Young (Compton, NH), who finished third. Stephani Victor (Park City, UT) finished the day in second.
The Team will be back in the starting gate again on Friday for the super combined. Friday will be the last race for the U.S. Adaptive Alpine Team until the New Year.
